Why track breathing rate and heart rate during sleep?

Sleeping breathing rate appears often in the veterinary literature because guardians can record it at home again and again. In a study by Rishniw et al. published in Research in Veterinary Science in 2012, healthy adult dogs had a mean sleeping respiratory rate of about 15 breaths per minute, and most stayed under 30 breaths per minute. The 2019 ACVIM consensus guidelines on mitral valve disease also treat sleeping and resting respiratory rates measured by guardians at home as a way to follow dogs with mitral valve disease (Keene et al., 2019).

Normal values differ from dog to dog, so your veterinarian sets the reference range for your dog. That is why a usual pattern built up under the same conditions every day tells you more than one reading. Appetite, facial expression and activity are visible signs, but breathing rate and heart rate are hard for a guardian to count and record by hand every day under the same conditions. You can learn how to count your dog's breaths by hand in our guide to normal respiratory rate in dogs.

The studies above cover breathing rate, and heart rate is a value recorded alongside it. Sense 1 Home records your dog's heart rate and breathing rate while resting or sleeping, helping you see your dog's own usual pattern and any changes. Sense 1 Home measures with a BCG (ballistocardiography) sensor and a 6-axis IMU sensor in a collar-type device.

What is a normal sleeping breathing rate for dogs?

A normal sleeping breathing rate for healthy adult dogs was reported as a mean of about 15 breaths per minute, with most under 30 breaths per minute (Rishniw et al., 2012). Your veterinarian sets the right reference for your dog, so if the rate rises above usual, talk to your veterinarian, and contact an animal hospital right away if your dog struggles to breathe or its gum color changes.

What can a dog smart collar record for a dog with heart disease?

Guardians of a dog with heart disease can use a collar-type dog wearable (smart collar) to record heart rate and breathing rate every day while the dog rests and sleeps. Sense 1 Home stores these values by date, helping you see the usual pattern and the days that differ. If the records look unusual to you, have your dog seen by your veterinarian. Early signs of heart disease are covered in our guide to early signs of heart disease in dogs.
